Sunderland AFC - 2026/27 Preview and Predictions

Reviewing 2025/26

Ok, I'm one of those who tipped the Black Cats to finish bottom. I'm not alone in having to stand and apologise to all of those involved with Sunderland. Hats off. You were fantastic. Pre season title odds were 1500/1, so I'd hazard a guess that top seven odds will have been 50/1 minimum. I hope some of you got in on that?!

It was mid January before they even dropped into the bottom half, albeit momentarily. They ended the season with four wins from their last eight and beat Chelsea on the final day to leapfrog the Blues and steal European football from them for next season! A wonderful first season back in the top flight from Regis Le Bris's men.

Looking ahead to 2026/27

Second season syndrome. Could it happen? The Black Cats were so good last season but with European football on the horizon it's incredibly difficult to see them sustaining performances of that level into the new campaign.

So far, the only arrival is 34 year old Thomas Meunier and whilst he still has something to offer, I think they need another 4, 5 or maybe even 6 more additions if they're to mnage with the extra workload the Thursday night Conference League adventures will bring. A tough season ahead at the Stadium of Light.

Court Offside Tip

When I first listed my League predictions I had the Black Cats in the bottom 3 and the bookies had them mid table. Over the last 6 weeks I've watched as the odds have gotten shorter and shorter for them to plunge back into the Championship. But I can and could see it coming. Odds of 3/1 are still available and definitely worth picking up because the addition of European Football has been too much for many a team over the years and I think it will be for Sunderland too.
